New theme: Atahualpa

// March 11th, 2009 // 6 Comments » // Web Stuff

As much as I really adore the Mandingo theme for this blog, I was getting kind of tired of it after a year, so I decided to switch to something else.  After scouting briefly around the WordPress Themes site, I decided to try on:

Here is the Atahualpa theme with default options set:

Here is the Atahualpa theme after about 30 minutes of tinkering with options:

I am no PHP wizard.  I’m not even a CSS journeywoman.  These changes came with poking, prodding, and experimenting, or what Dorothea Salo calls “beating it with rocks.”  I need to create new images that fit better into the sampling that this theme does, and I probably need to do other stuff, but I like it for tonight.  It’s an excellent theme, worthy of a donation, which I’ll do when I’m a bit more awake.

Also, looks like my meebo widget disappeared after writing this post. foo.

Update: I think that my widget problem was caused by Firefox. A recent upgrade to Firefox has fixed the widget problem elsewhere.  Now: to add it back here.

Learning 2.0: web-based applications

// December 7th, 2007 // 2 Comments » // Libraries, Web Stuff

In this Learning 2.0 “thing,” we were asked to look at the UCD Library 2 Go blog, which highlights online applications. The “Customize your homepage” entry caught my eye. I recently experimented with NetVibes to collate my social networking “stuff” into one page. I abandoned it pretty quickly, as the tab for meebo had to be over on its own instead of a column on my NetVibes page:

I would love to trade out that flickr section for a small version of my meebo buddy list and movable chat windows–a mini version of the meebo page–but that’s not the way it works, apparently. Too bad.

Another recent online application I’ve used is Picnik. It’s an online image editor that allows you to make changes (like crop, exposure, contrast…) to images that you’ve stored on flickr, Facebook, Photobucket and more. The free set of tools would be sort of limited for someone used to using Photoshop, but for quick fixes, it’s great, and if you’re interested in more flexibility, a premium upgrade is only $24.95 per year.

Learning 2.0: Gettin’ Wiki with it

// November 30th, 2007 // No Comments » // Libraries, Web Stuff

I’m trying to get caught up with my library’s Learning 2.0 program before the grand finish on December 17. One of the week’s lessons I’m lacking is on wikis, and coincidentally, I was in the Library Society of the World meebo room earlier! Worlds collide! OK, maybe I need to clarify: one of my favorite library-related wikis is the Library Society wiki. It’s a place to find library-related silliness and the occasional curse word. OK, more than occasional, so put on your tough pants and wade in!

A wiki idea that I would love to steal replicate is the presentation wiki. Someday, when I have a free few minutes…

As much as I love wikis and can see potential for their use in libraries for collaborative work–my dean created a pbwiki site for us to make collaborative changes to our mission/vision statements and our strategic plan!–I found that I have been using Google Documents a lot more.
